CLICK ON PICTURE TO SEE THE SALMON IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM 2009 AT CREATIVE MONTESORRI in Trenton MI!

Congratulations to Steelheader of the Year Tom Cunningham...

....and to Mel Backhaus & Bob Steffes on lifetime achievement awards for their dedicated service to supporting the Vision Impaired Kids outing for almost 25 years!

FYI for those receiving the newsletter electronically

We have had a few problems lately with some members being unable to access the newsletter link that is forwarded each month, and after a little research have found the problem.

There is a new version for Internet Explorer if you are using that for your main web browser. The newest version has significantly upgraded security programming which for now, interferes with your ability to upload the newsletter.

Current solution until there is a patch/fix available from Microsoft, is to 1) not download the update 2) to download and use another browser program. Firezilla is a pretty good browser and can be downloaded for free!

      Beware though!

It has been communicated that the Canadian and Ohio DNR will be watching closely as they do not have the same rules, where a violation for excess rods is around a $150 fine. Along with a little fyi as it appears the Michigan DNR honors an approximate 1/4 mile leeway on our side of the state line when in the water for the Ohio DNR to pursue rule breakers.

Canadian Fishing License change!

To fish in Canadian waters this year will require a Canadian Outdoors Card which will cost nine dollars in addition to a Canadian fishing license.  A one-day license does not require the card.  The new regulations are the first part of a new licensing automation system to be in place in 2010.

These cards and fishing licenses may be ordered by calling 1-800-667-1940.  Ordering by phone will take five to six weeks for delivery.

Salmon in Schools Program was successful!

As noted in a previous newsletter, our club decided to join in after we were contacted last year by a Teacher from Creative Montessori Center in Trenton, MI that they were interested in participating.  Well, the kids, teachers, parents and all who were involved must have done something right, because on May 9th, the kid’s turned loose the salmon fingerlings in the Huron River, Huroc Park in Flatrock MI.

All told, we counted almost 40 kids, most had both parents in attendance, the teachers from Creative Montessori, and some of our club members. Enough that there were clearly over 110 people involved in the release, even garnering an article in the local downriver newspaper. Billie Jo Cruz, Joe Roehler and kids and the other teachers brought the salmon fingerlings along with a PVC pipe and clear cups to allow the kids each to release a fingerling.

All told of 189 egg’s I believe, the kids were able to raise the salmon smolt to over 4” in length and release 95 live salmon fingerlings! In fact from a later conversation, this might be the most successful of all the first year projects this year, but will have to wait till the DNR can confirm those bragging rights. Either way, way to go kids! All one had to do was be there to see how interested and involved these kids ranging mostly from 3-8 years old were. Something rare to see with all the distractions in today’s fast paced world!

Look’s like we will be doing this again next year, and who knows, there may be another school involved if all goes well.

Thanks again also to the club members who made this all possible! If you are interested, are located in the downriver/SE Michigan area, and wish to participate in the Salmon in Schools program, just follow this link http://www.mi.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10369_50075---,00.html and contact any one of our board members listed in our club newsletter. Please contact us prior to the middle of June as the teachers involved must go to a training class (usually in June) before the DNR allows your school to participate!

Till then, have a safe and happy 2009!

The Huron Valley Sportfishing Club

Welcome!

  • Located in Southeast lower Michigan, the Huron Valley Sportfishing Club was formed in 1985 and have been part of past and on-going conservation efforts with the State organization, MSSFA and others in protecting and promoting the sport fishery here in Michigan.

  • Huron Valley’s 150 + members participate in more activities than fishing, with our Spring Show, Cabin Fever Dance, July Fish Fry, and Vision Impaired Children’s outing to name a few.

  • Also keep in mind that we have Lake Erie at our back door allowing us to fish for Perch, and Walleye also.

  • We hope you enjoy your visit to our website and find our tips and information useful.
