Welcome!

  • Located in Southeast lower Michigan, the Huron Valley Sportfishing Club was formed in 1985 and has been part of past and on-going conservation efforts with the State organization, MSSFA and others in protecting and promoting the sport fishery here in Michigan.

  • Huron Valley’s 150 + members participate in more activities than fishing, with our Spring Show, Cabin Fever Dance, July Fish Fry, and Vision Impaired Children’s outing to name a few.

  • Also keep in mind that we have Lake Erie at our back door allowing us to fish for Perch, and Walleye also.

  • We hope you enjoy your visit to our website and find our tips and information useful.

3 Rod rule in Affect

Although 3 fishing rods are allowed for trolling in the Michigan waters of lake Erie only 2 are allowed in Ohio and Canada.

It has been communicated that the Canadian and Ohio DNR will be watching closely as they do not have the same rules. A violation for excess rods is around a $150 fine.  FYI - the Michigan DNR honors an approximate 1/4 mile leeway on our side of the state line when in the water for the Ohio DNR to pursue rule breakers.

Canadian Fishing License Reminder!

To fish in Canadian waters requires a Canadian Outdoors Card which will cost nine dollars in addition to a Canadian fishing license.  A one-day license does not require the card.  These cards and fishing licenses may be ordered by calling 1-800-667-1940.  Ordering by phone will take five to six weeks for delivery.

Salmon in Schools successful again in 2011!

Well it is 2010 and the teachers and kids at Creative Montessori Center in Taylor Michigan did another fine job with the Salmon in Schools program. On Sunday May 23rd, the kids, teachers, parents and friends, totaling again over 110 people, gathered at Huron Park in Flat Rock to release the 95 King salmon Smoltz out of approximately 185 eggs that survived to approximately 4” in length.

With the help of Steve Gardiner (aka “MacGyver”) building a new release pump and drain setup, Billie Jo Cruz along with Joe, Dakota & Maria had each one of the kids who cared for the salmon to take a turn releasing them. Sounds like this group of 3-8 year old kids may have bragging rights again for best survival rate among the schools participating.

More good news, this next season we will have another school for a total of two schools participating in the Salmon in Schools project with Wilson Junior High School on 15th St Wyandotte, MI also participating. This is a good time to note that our club alone can provide a total of four sets of equipment for four separate salmon in schools projects concurrently.

We look forward to twice as many kids and parents becoming involved in the great outdoors by learning about salmon and their cycle of life.

Thanks again to all our club members that made this possible and the teachers that help us promote this great project. If you are interested in doing this at your school, please go to the DNR web page www.mi.gov/dnr and type in salmon in schools to review the requirements. Training by DNR personnel is required for the person leading the project in your school, usually in June, before they will let you participate. As for equipment, our club will donate the needed equipment to get you started and help setup; the rest is up to you.

You can also arrange to stop by and see either one of the projects as they are in progress and talk to the teachers responsible for leading those projects as there are usually some short cuts or little solutions they have learned through experience to help make the project more successful.

Till the next project begins in late October 2011, thanks and look forward to seeing you there.
